Project Overview
The Project
One of the highest honours during my time in Scotland was a cooperative project with award-winning, Edinburgh based Canongate Publishers, for the creation of a limited edition of Yann Martel’s bestseller “Life of Pi”.
Together with my British graphic design colleague Teen Redpath and Chinese Designer Jiaying Dai, I developed the idea of having two versions of the book. A day and a night edition with laser-cut dustjackets and a glow-in-the-dark coating on the hardcover book underneath. By giving the actual book a coat of glow-in-the-dark varnish, we were able to create a stunning cover design with a tiger and title silhouette, glowing from underneath, just like the phosphorescent water in the movie adaption of the story. For the cover design, we decided to feature half of the tiger’s face, and complement the other half of it with a carefully set book title to create the visual impression of a whole tiger. Both editions feature a slipcase with the same laser-cut glow in the dark design. A project that was great fun to make and experiment with and that is still very dear to my heart.
