Dandy Books (My own Publishing Startup)
Cover Art, Illustration, Editorial, Publishing, Marketing
Tobi das Imsel was one of the most intense and challenging projects but also one of the most rewarding I have faced in my career so far. As part of a new business strategy for my startup “Dandy Designers” I founded “Dandy Books”, a publishing service positioned between self- and traditional publishing, supporting independant authors with the development of their work and turning their pieces into eye catching, professionally created books which we then produced and published through our world-wide print- and distribution partners. As self publishers usually have no training at professional content creation and publishing itself at all, the creation of high quality content was at the very heart of this new business. The authors vision was a vivid children’s book with a twist and a vision: educating children about major society issues of today,
such as the deforestation of the rain forest, the way humans treat animals and nature in general as well as fundamental things such as tollerance, respect and environmental friendly behaviour. I lead the production from conception, text- character and name development, illustration, marketing and editorial to production and publishing. Additionally we produced a companion children’s song as well as an audio book. One of my favourite tasks was the creation of a visual identity, a custom type face and the book cover. Together with the Illustrator Julian Nitsche, we have acomplished a much greater aim then publishing a book: we’ve created the world’s first fully on iPad illustrated children’s book, which was not just featured by ProCreate (our Drawing app) but also by software giant Adobe. Throughout a period of two years I was in charge of making the Author’s dream come true, bringing the story of Tobi the Imsel into many children’s rooms around the globe. The book was nominated twice for the British Book Design Award and came amongst the top twenty. A copy of this book is available in both the German and the Bavarian State Libraries.
